About Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, BSc (Hons) - at University of Nottingham

Year one
During this introductory year, you study fundamental aspects of cell biology, biochemistry, genetics and cellular control together with essential chemistry, including molecular structure and reactivity, bonding, chemical equilibria and kinetics. These courses are supported by practical studies in cell biology, biochemistry, genetics and chemistry; with optional courses in biology, microbiology, physiology or mathematics.

Year two
In this year, your studies continue at greater depth covering structures of amino acids, principles of macromolecular structural analysis and function, protein and gene structure and function, genomic data analysis, extracellular signals, metabolic regulation, and oxidative phosphorylation. The course also includes laboratory classes in Analysis of Proteins and Enzymes, and Practical Gene Cloning plus a dissertation and optional courses.

Year three
A major feature is an individual project which may be lab, bio-informatics or literature based. Courses in advanced gene cloning, cancer and other diseases, protein folding and life cycles, are taken along with a course developing transferable skills of presentation, interpretation and criticism of scientific data. Optional courses in developmental biology, signal transduction, clinical biochemistry and immunology are available.

By the end of the course
You will have a sound understanding of the fundamental aspects of biochemistry and will have undertaken laboratory classes in analysis of proteins and enzymes, and practical gene cloning. Through an individual project in Year three, which may be lab, bio-informatics or literature-based, you will have developed an in-depth knowledge of a specific area of biochemistry, as well as transferable skills.
