About Computing and Information Systems , BSc (Hons) - at University of Nottingham

This degree is designed to develop a professional approach to both practical and theoretical aspects of computing and information systems. The need for team work in any software system development is emphasised through a year long group project in your Part I studies. In depth analysis of a practical problem is undertaken in your final year individual dissertation. On the course you will gain an appreciation of current computing practice in order that skills learnt can be applied immediately after graduation. You will also have a broad understanding of the issues faced in modern information systems development in a rapidly changing context. You will be introduced to practical tools that are used in developing software and information systems in an enterprise level environment.

Year one
The Computing and Information Systems BSc Hons course does not offer a first year in the UK. The degree is designed for direct entry to Year two for applicants with an average grade of Credit from a NCC Education accredited Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Computer Studies.

Year two
You will be given a thorough introduction to object oriented programming and the development of graphic interface programming in Java. You will also consolidate what you know by taking part in a software engineering group project. At the same time you will extend your knowledge of the core themes through new topics such as networks, Artificial Intelligence methods and large scale systems design.

Year three
In your final year you will study the themes of your degree at an advanced level, including undertaking a large practical programming project. Project topics are agreed in discussion with a supervisor. This will allow you to specialise in your area of interest of enterprise computing. You will undertake modules in enterprise level computing and advanced computer communications and will be able to select from a wide range of options available in the School.

By the end of the course
You will graduate with: general knowledge and understanding of computers and information systems; specialised knowledge of the design, implementation, user interfaces, and evaluation of information systems; experience in using a variety of tools and methodologies in order to solve a variety of problems encountered in the area of information systems; an understanding of the professional, legal, and ethical aspects of the discipline.
