About German, MA (Hons) - at University of Glasgow

German involves the study of a key European language and its culture.

What will I study?

At all levels of study you will have the opportunity to advance in your understanding and use of the language, both written and oral, and will gain an understanding of the cultural forces that helped to shape contemporary society in German-speaking countries by looking at a selection of literary and philosophical writing and other cultural media.

The programme has a language component, taught in part by native speakers, which gradually increases your competence in spoken and written German to a high level. In the literary/cultural component you are introduced to the study of representative literary texts and their historical, social and intellectual background, starting with the 20th/21st century in the first year and moving to the 18th and 19th centuries in the second year.

If you have not studied German before, you will be catered for in a class specially designed for beginners with an emphasis on intensive language acquisition. A good performance in the beginners’ course may allow you to continue with German in second year and potentially on to Honours level.

If you progress to Honours you are usually required to spend a year’s residence abroad (an additional year before entering Junior Honours).

How will I learn?

Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, small group tutorials and seminars.

Special features
  • Excellent audio-visual and IT facilities are available to support both the language and the wider cultural aspects of the course and emphasis in teaching is given to the development of both oral and written skills.

  • At all levels, elements of tuition are given by native speakers of German.
