About Social Work, MA - at University of East Anglia (UEA)

Accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council, this degree offers an academic and professional qualification that will enable you to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council to register as a professional Social Worker.

Study

Students of this degree will understand the theoretical foundations of social work, rooted in psychology and sociology. They will explore social policy and legal context, including statutory provisions regarding child care, mental health and adult care. There is also a consistent focus on working with individuals, families, groups, fellow social workers and other professionals.

Structure

Placement-based learning is central to this degree, with placements carried out with at least two different service user groups, with personal tutors actively encouraging your progress and a practice educator who will guide and assess your practice.

Teaching

The course is taught by expert academics who promote a supportive, academically rigorous and stimulating learning environment. Develop your skills and expertise by engaging with real life case studies and scenarios. Students undertaking the MA Social Work degree benefit from close collaboration with research conducted by the Centre for Research on Children and Families - one of the University's Research Centres working at the forefront of policy debates in social policy.

Employability

On completion of this degree, you will have acquired the knowledge and skills to start work as a confident, competent social worker. You will be equipped with the skills and expertise that you will need to pursue a career as a successful practitioner within the caring professions. Many graduates go on to work in local authority services departments or continue into further academic research.

Entry requirements

Open to applicants with a good degree (min 2:1 or equivalent) in any subject. Professional experience of applicants is also taken into account where relevant. Applications are also encouraged from those wishing to return to academic study.
