About Computer Science, BSc - at University of Birmingham

The purpose of this degree is to produce graduates who have a deep understanding of the science of computation. As in our other degrees there is a strong programming component, but the mathematical principles underpinning programs are emphasised. Being curiosity driven, this degree allows considerable latitude for students to choose modules based on their academic interests. Graduates will still be highly suitable for entry into the general software industry, but the course will allow you to develop skills required for working in technically demanding fields, including research.

The first year is identical to that in Computer Science and Software Engineering. In the second year you will learn about functional or logic programming, and take further core courses in computer science. You can decide to acquire skills in Software Engineering, or take courses investigating Artificial Intelligence.

In the final year you will devote one third of your time to your degree project. The eight remaining modules are chosen from over twenty-five options. You can specialise in one or two areas of computer science, or select courses from across the discipline. You can also take this degree with a Year of Study in Continental Europe or a Certificate in Industrial Studies.

Typical final year projects:
  • A threaded web server

  • Evolutionary robotics

  • A platform for experiments in visual perception

  • Realistic weather emulation for computer games

  • A robot programming language for children

  • Genetic algorithms in quantum computers
