Postgraduate research degrees (MPhil/PhD)

Research degrees are designed to equip graduates with the skills and methods necessary to carry out further research within a research environment, or to move into a range of other professional careers in academia or business. Student Testimonials
Tanja Krizaj - MSc in Advanced Occupational Therapy
University of Plymouth Student
I started to study at the University of Plymouth in 2005 as a postgraduate student on the MSc in Advanced Occupational Therapy course. It was a real challenge for me since I was a foreign student and English was not my first language. The thing that suited me most was that it was a distance learning course. As it would have been difficult for me to move from Slovenia at that time. I was pretty nervous when I had to go to the first study block, but everyone welcomed me with a lot of enthusiasm and positive thinking. I must say that throughout the whole study I had great support from my lecturers, tutors and other members of staff at the UoP. They were always prepared to give me guidance or discuss challenging issues about our study.

The programme gave me a new perspective on occupational therapy practice. I started to ask myself about the effectiveness of my work and about occupational therapy services in my country. It made me realise that to challenge one's own practice means to improve and to develop further. This led me to start my own private practice in occupational therapy and soon after I was offered the opportunity to start teaching occupational therapy in the College of Health Studies at the University of Ljubljana. I currently work as an assistant lecturer in the Occupational Therapy department and I really enjoy my work. Besides my professional development the programme has helped me grow personally as well. I became more self-confident, and outward looking, even beyond the border with Slovenia and I also improved my English.

All of this would not be possible without this MSc course and I certainly recommend the University of Plymouth to all of the coming students.
Saurabh Ghelani - MSc Network Systems Engineering
University of Plymouth Student
Manager, Accenture Technology Consulting, The Netherlands

I chose to do a masters to gain a broader understanding of the latest network technologies as well as to develop my personal and professional skills. Coming to the UK was also an ideal opportunity to share knowledge and experiences with people from around the world.

After evaluating many courses the MSc Network Systems Engineering appealed to me most. As one of the fastest growing universities in the UK the University of Plymouth was an ideal choice with its excellent reputation for teaching, research and facilities along with a great location. I also really liked the open interaction between the students and the faculty.

Now as a Manager for Accenture I am responsible for defining IT and security strategies for global clients and defining IT disaster recovery plans and strategies. I manage teams of at least 10 professionals working on multiple projects and also act as a mentor and coach.

I enjoy the challenge of working with diverse global clients, each with their own requirements. Security is a very dynamic and challenging field as you have to always be one step ahead.
Natalie Hooton - PhD Tourism, Crime and Crisis Management. Demonstrator for University of Plymouth School of Tourism
University of Plymouth Student
After studying at the University of Plymouth for my BSc (Hons) in Business and Tourism and my MSc in Tourism and Hospitality Management, I was fortunate enough to gain a Plymouth Business School scholarship and continue to study for a PhD in Tourism, Crime and Crisis Management.

Plymouth is a great place to learn, it's a motivating institute which provides you with so many opportunities to develop on a personal and professional level. My support system of lecturers, supervisors and staff has been second to none. They have supported my every move and understand my decisions and research aspirations.

The staff encouraged me to become a research assistant and a part-time demonstrator which has provided valuable experience. So for me choosing the University of Plymouth was one of the best decisions I have made within my academic career. Without a doubt, the programmes have changed my life. From being 'stuck in a rut', to now, a life filled with opportunity and possibilities.
