The School of Environment and Development (SED) is an internationally recognized centre of excellence for research and teaching focusing on the problematic relationships between society, economy and the environment.
The School was created in 2004 as part of the new University of Manchester, building on the strengths and the experience in teaching and research of pre-existing units such as the School of Geography (over 100 years of history), the School of Planning (created in 1952), the Institute for Development Policy and Management (founded in 1958), and the Manchester School of Architecture (created in 1996 as a joint venture between the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University).
SED is a school of substantial size and diversity, with over 80 academic staff and a student population of 1300, of which 500 are postgraduates, many of whom are international students. The School offers 9 undergraduate programmes (BA and BSc) and 27 postgraduate masters programmes (MA and MSc). SED is also an increasingly popular choice for PhD students, thanks to the School's four world-class doctoral programmes in Architecture, Geography, Planning and International Development.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes
Through the Manchester School of Architecture, SED offers all the university-based training necessary to become a qualified architect, thanks to the accreditation of its programmes by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Architects Registration Board (ARB). The Manchester Architecture Research Centre, also hosted by the School, is a recognized centre of excellence for postgraduate research in architectural studies.
Undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Geography cover both physical and human geography, focusing on subjects of particular contemporary importance, such as environmental governance, environmental monitoring, and geographic information systems (GIS).
In the area of International Development, the School's Institute for Development Policy and Management (IDPM), which is the largest university-based development studies institute in the UK, offers postgraduate masters and research (PhD) programmes on a variety of development-related subjects, including development economics, public policy and management, human resource management and development in emerging economies, poverty and social development, environment and development, and ICTs for development.
The School also offers complete training in Urban and Regional Planning, through its flagship Master of Planning (MPlan) programme and through other undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that are fully accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and/or the Landscape Institute (LI). Postgraduate masters and research in this area focus in particular on environmental management, environmental impact assessment and urban development and regeneration.
Excellence in Research
In the 2008 RAE, research undertaken by staff at the Institute for Development Policy and Management (IDPM) contributed to the University of Manchester being classed as the top university in the UK in terms of research power for its research on the different aspects of international development.
Two thirds (65%) of Geography research was also graded as internationally excellent or above in the 2008 RAE, placing SED in the top third of all geography-related institutions in the UK, and the RAE has also shown SED to be amongst the very top Planning and Architecture schools in the country, with 20% of research in this area judged to be of the highest world-leading quality, and a further 40% deemed internationally excellent - placing Manchester sixth of 26 universities according to Grade Point Average.
SED also hosts some of the most prestigious international research centres on subjects relating to climate change, poverty reduction, management in emerging economies and environmental studies, including the Brooks World Poverty Institute (BWPI), led by Nobel Prize winner Professor Joseph Stiglitz.
The School thus provides an excellent environment for postgraduate research, as attested also by the increasing number of PhD students it attracts.
Student Support and Facilities
Learning at SED is underpinned by the work of highly-skilled technical and administrative staff, with significant experience of supporting students at different levels of study and with different needs, in particular international students.
Students in SED also benefit from excellent study resources, including discipline-based libraries, analytical laboratories, studio facilities, workshops and several computer clusters with GIS facilities.
The School is housed in the state-of-the-art Arthur Lewis Building, built in 2007 and located at the heart of the University Campus. The building is equipped with dedicated postgraduate PC clusters, study space, modern research laboratories and a coffee bar, and the John Rylands Library, one of the largest of its kind in the UK, is just a short walk away.
A Truly International Environment
SED has a thriving and truly global teaching and research culture, with staff and students hailing from over 80 different countries around the world, and in particular from Asia, Africa, North America, Europe and the Caribbean.
The School also has strong research links with similar institutions across the globe, and many study programmes include fieldwork activities, through which students get to learn about their subject of choice in different cultural, social and economic settings. In recent years, fieldwork destinations have included Uganda, Turkey, Brazil, the United States (in New York), India, Cuba and several EU destinations, such as Brussels and Amsterdam.
Careers
SED graduates benefit from excellent career prospects in a variety of areas, due to their advanced understanding of important contemporary challenges such as climate change, poverty reduction and other issues linked in various ways to the relation between societies, economies and the environment.
In particular, the School trains fully accredited and very capable architects and planners, and more generally several SED students have progressed on to excellent careers in public and private sector organizations and NGOs around the world, including international organizations such as the UN and other large international bodies and corporations.
