We have two safe campuses in the heart of England, which are about 30 miles apart. They are both easy to get to by road, rail and air.
Derby is a bustling city about 30 minutes from Nottingham, an hour from Birmingham and less than two hours from London. There are people from all over the world living in Derby - it's small, safe and friendly with a thriving multi-cultural community.
Buxton is a small picturesque town on the edge of the Peak District National Park. It's about an hour from Derby and Manchester and less than three hours from London. Buxton is much quieter than Derby, with miles of beautiful countryside nearby - it's a really safe and friendly place to be.

Our courses
- We offer a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in subjects like education, health, science, art, design, technology, media, humanities, business, computing, law, hospitality, tourism, sport and spa management.
- If you need to improve your English skills before you start your degree, you can take one of our English language courses first.
- At Derby you can also choose to study some courses online, so you can study from anywhere in the world.
- You can start some of our courses in January as well as September, and some of our online courses start in April too.
Supporting you
- At Derby we will support you right from when you're deciding which course to choose through to your graduation - so if you need any help or advice now or during your course, just get in touch.
- You will always be welcome in our chaplaincy. Our chaplains and faith advisers work across both campuses, organising talks and discussion groups, Fairtrade lunches, social justice campaigns and day trips. And they are always there if you want to talk to someone. They represent these faith traditions: Anglican, Methodist, Free Church, Roman Catholic, Russian Orthodox, United Reform Church, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, Hindu, Unitarian and Baha'i.
Our facilities
We have spent over £75 million on facilities in the last few years to make sure that you have the best student experience ever. See our facilities at www.derby.ac.uk/video
There is:
- our Markeaton Street building for courses in arts, design, media and technology
- Academy, our Students' Union bar, designed by our own students
- specialist computing suites for games, programming and networking
- our all-weather floodlit pitches for football, hockey and rugby
- our magnificent Devonshire Campus in Buxton
- our commercial salons and spa, for training hairdressing and spa professionals.
Our research degrees
In our last assessment, Government inspectors ranked over half of our research as of 'international excellence', and some even as 'world class'. As a postgraduate research student you will probably become a member of one of our research centres or groups.
We offer two routes to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD):
Choose the Traditional Route MPhil/PhD if you have already gained research skills by doing a relevant masters degree. If you have recently finished your undergraduate degree and want to move straight on to a research degree, choose the New Route PhD.
Improving your career prospects
As you will probably be taking your course to improve your career prospects, we will help you to stand out from other graduates:
- Because of our close links with employers you can be sure that you are learning the knowledge and skills needed in industry and you will build up good contacts to help you to get a job.
- We always look to our students first when we have a part time job or work placement opportunity to fill at the University.
- You can get professional qualifications while you are working towards some of our degrees.
- You can tailor your degree to match your career aspirations by choosing from a wide range of modules.
- Many of our degrees are accredited by professional bodies to make sure you develop the knowledge and skills employers are looking for.
- You can use our Career Development Centre while you are at Derby and for up to three years after you graduate.

| Student Testimonials |
| Daniel Storey is studying MSc Enterprise Computing part time while working for Price Waterhouse Coopers.
| |
"Derby's links with businesses and the computing industry have been useful because of the lectures and talks the companies come in and give us. It also gives students a chance to go out and work with companies and build contacts.
My studies are definitely helping me to further my career. They've made me focus on the types of things I need to be looking at, and where the industry itself is going. It's made me focus on where my career needs to go." |
| Rohit Paliwal is from India. He is studying MSc Computer Games Production.

|
"Living in Derby is very pleasing because it's a quiet place and everything is easy for me as an international student. Also it's easy to make friends if you go to the local pubs at night to socialise." |
| Katerina Georgiadou is from Cyprus. She completed her LL.B (Hons) and LL.M Commercial Law degrees at Derby. She is now working on her PhD.
| |
"The lecturers are very approachable and add a touch of humour to an interesting course. They're incredibly inspiring and display enthusiasm for their subjects, whilst pushing you to achieve your best. The University's International Office has been very supportive, not only in providing help, but also in treating me as an individual and not just another student."
