Introduction
Brunel University prides itself on the quality and the relevance of its academic work. It places great value on its pure investigative research but also values the usefulness of its research to the community at large. Collaboration with major companies, the public sector, charities, national institutions and with countries worldwide is an essential element of Brunel's research activity. Brunel is confident that its courses bear comparison with the best, and teaching quality assessments by the Government's Quality Assurance Agency prove it. Brunel's results in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise further cement the University's status as a research intensive institution that is both truly creative and collaborative. Continuing in its £250m investment, Brunel has already seen huge developments in sporting, teaching and research facilities as well as large numbers of additional research-focused academic appointments.
Facilities
Brunel's Graduate School is located at the heart of the Uxbridge campus and, as well as social areas, it offers a quiet study room, 24-hour secure access, a conference room and a postgraduate-only computer room. The Graduate School is a central source of information and advice for all postgraduate students, and provides transferable skills training seminars. Its postgraduate society aims to bring together postgraduates from across the University through social events, research evenings and a quarterly newsletter. Brunel's recently refurbished and extended library offers a wide range of services and has provision for either large group or private study.
Taught Courses
Brunel offers over 100 taught master's courses and many are available in either full-time or part-time modes. The University has also introduced a new type of master's degree - Master of Research (MRes), which can provide a solid foundation for students who intend to go on to a PhD, by means of thorough training in research theory, skills and practice. The taught modules vary in the way they are presented. Through lectures, seminars and more small-group teaching than is possible at undergraduate level, postgraduates from a variety of work backgrounds are able to exchange professional expertise within an academic context.
Research Programmes
As befits a university with Brunel's history and reputation, research is at the heart of all it does. Research underpins, indeed leads to, most of the taught courses on offer and informs the academic work of its postgraduate students. It is responsible for much of Brunel's collaborative work with business, industry and the public sector. Brunel boasts a culture of intellectual endeavour that is fundamental to the well-being of all students and staff and encourages the cross-fertilisation of ideas and expertise for which the University has long been famous.
Fees and Funding
The University offers a limited number of postgraduate scholarships, based on merit and awarded across all academic areas. These are available to applicants who hold an offer of a place to study at Brunel.

| Carola Kruse, PhD Mathematics
|
After taking her first degree in Germany, she took the MSc in Computational Mathematics with Modelling at Brunel because it included modules on numerics as well as stochastics and finance, bridging the gap between the theoretical and computational part of applied mathematics.
"Lectures were divided into the theoretical part and a seminar or lab class which helped to get a better insight into the applications. The other students on my course came from all over the world - Malaysia, Nigeria, Austria, Germany. However, the class was small enough to have a personal atmosphere and there was a big exchange of skills and knowledge. I also socialised with fellow students, played table tennis and joined the international and postgraduate society. Not only was the course a year of new experiences, it paved the way for the PhD in hyperbolic partial differential equations I'm doing at Brunel right now". |
