Overview
|
Economic issues in health and healthcare are recognised in all countries to be of great importance. The continuing growth of both public and private healthcare sectors means that there is a large and growing demand for health economics expertise. Moreover, understanding the resource issues and the ways in which economics can help to analyse them is increasingly necessary for health professionals, whether clinical, in health services management or in industries related to healthcare. This course is designed to meet the demand for increased quantitative and analytical skills in the process of decision making in the healthcare sector.
Course content
The course consists of seven modules and a dissertation. Full-time students undertake seven taught modules; part-time students undertake three or four modules in each year.
Modules include:
- Quantitative methods
- Economic evaluation in healthcare
- Economic evaluation workshops
- Epidemiology
- Advanced economic evaluation in healthcare
- Welfare economics
- Economics of healthcare
- Economic research project.
Work placement
We mediate with firms to help students get internships during the term/s they write their final dissertation.
Employment opportunities
This course prepares students for career opportunities in areas such as policy and analysis for industry, professional associations and governmental bodies; teaching and research positions in academic institutions; and the economic evaluation of products in the pharmaceutical industry.
Former students are presently employed in companies such as Pfizer Ltd. and Glaxo Smith-Kline; economics consulting firms such as Fourth Hurdle and Oxford Outcomes; and organisations such as NICE, the Department of Health and the Office for Health Economics.
Entry requirements
Candidates should hold a degree in a relevant discipline, or a degree in any discipline supplemented by relevant work experience (minimum degree award of upper second class). Candidates without a degree may be considered, provided they have appropriate professional qualifications or experience. An equivalent qualification from an overseas university will also be considered.
For those students whose first language is not English one of the following qualifications are also required:
- IELTS: an overall score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 for each subtest
- TOEFL (internet-based): 100 - 105.
