Degrees in Germany

In Germany, undergraduate degrees are offered by public and private universities, with an emphasis on Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) programmes, among others. Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen) provide more skills-oriented undergraduate courses. Meanwhile, Technical Universities (Technische Universitäten) are renowned for their engineering and technology programmes. Business schools in Germany are well-regarded for their focus on commerce, management, and economics degrees.

German is the main language of teaching, but there is a growing number of programmes offered in English, designed to appeal to international students.

How to Apply for a Degree in Germany

International students can apply directly to their chosen university or through the Uni-Assist portal, a centralised service that processes applications for certain universities.

Application requirements often include a secondary school diploma equivalent to the German Abitur, a motivational letter, and proof of language proficiency — TestDaF or DSH for German-taught programmes, and IELTS or TOEFL for English-taught ones. The academic requirements can vary significantly depending on the course and university.

Undergraduate Tuition Fees for International Students

One of the most attractive aspects of studying in Germany is the low cost of tuition. Most public universities do not charge tuition fees for undergraduate programmes, regardless of the student’s nationality. However, a semester fee is typically charged, covering administrative costs and a public transport ticket, ranging from approximately EUR 150 to EUR 350.

While scholarships are less necessary due to the absence of tuition fees, they are still available from various organisations, aimed at supporting living expenses and academic projects.
